Instead, Desmond took after his mother, Bertha Doss, who taught him about compassion, helping others, and the importance of following Christ. He didn't know how." The Great Depression left their father, a carpenter, despondent and turning to alcohol at times (though the movie greatly exaggerates this and makes him abusive). "He was always helpful to people," said his brother Harold, who was his best friend when they were boys. The Conscientious Objector Documentaryĭid Desmond Doss always have a desire to help others, even before joining the army? Desmond vowed that would be the last time he ever touched a gun. Desmond believed that his father would've killed his uncle (his mother's brother) if his mother hadn't stepped in. ![]() After doing so, young Desmond returned just in time to see his father being loaded into a black police wagon in handcuffs. She called the police and told Desmond to hide the gun. His father pulled a gun on his uncle but his mother stepped in. His father and uncle were drunk and got into a fight (the movie implies the fight was between Desmond's father and mother). "My dad bought this Ten Commandments and Lord's Prayer illustrated on a nice frame, and I had looked at that picture of the Sixth Commandment, 'Thou shalt not kill.' There's a picture that had Cain and he killed his brother Abel, and I wonder how in the world could a brother do such a thing? I've pictured Christ for savin' life, I wanna be like Christ go savin' life instead of takin' life and that's the reason I take up medicine."Ī defining moment in Desmond's life that perhaps helped to further shape his attitude toward guns and violence happened when he was a boy. Desmond Doss, Medal of Honor: Oral Histories I was totally impressed with this group of guys!!! I’ll be using them for any future car repair needs. You can't always win, but when your buddies come to you and say they owe their life to me, what better reward can you get than that. Started right up & was told to go ahead, take it home for the 3 days they would be closed & see if everything was working well after they fixed it. ![]() I had a back brake light out that was also fixed. Called them before closing & my starter line needed tightened. I called the same day since a 3 day holiday was coming up, I wanted my car which started occasionally & to bring it back after the 3 day holiday for whatever needed done if not real serious. I was able to get it started & took to Belly Brother’s & left it for a diagnosis. I get home & shut off my car & it will not even turn over, just a clicking sound. They wanted an outrageous price, luckily my battery was under warranty at a battery place in town so I went & purchased a new prorated price battery. I paid a way overpriced diagnostic at a car dealership where my car was purchased to be told I needed new battery which was only 2 1/2 years old. Its amazing to find a car repair business that’s not out to get however much money they can from you. Awesome service, fast, efficient, friendly.
